way back in 1996, at the height of the widely acknowledged golden period for electronic music, d-saw a.k.a andré winter released a true classic on hamburgs highly influential superstition label. track 10:30 stood the test of time, becoming widely regarded as a key moment in european techno music history, despite its modest impact at the time. now, 20 years later, andré revisits the source material courtesy of some killer remixes on oliver huntemanns senso imprint. hamburg’s own h.o.s.h. (holger behn) delivers an epic twist to the cut, widening out the spaces and adding his own techy signature to the original. re.you offer up another flavour altogether, maintaining the iconic synth pulse of the source but introducing an infectious, driving groove. dubspeeka throw a bit more grit in into proceedings with a tough, machine funk mix, while andre winter himself reworks his classic into a slow burning groover that effortlessly showcases the elements that make this track so timeless.

dreams of the future reveal more about the mind of the dreamer than the future itself-. the third release of rome-based label suburban avenue consists of 3 original tracks from the liverpool-based producer binny and bouncing remix by zadig. -polymorph- and -i/o- are oldschool, direct techno bangers that draw influence from detroit and beyond. with its minimally acidic riff, -signal repeat- is the perfect counterbalance to these tracks and is reminiscent of robert hood s early productions. zadig s electric remix of -i/o- takes the core of the track and re-works it into a subtle, yet tough peak-time groover that will slot easily into any discerning techno dj s set.

mount liberation unlimited s debut 12inch on junk yard connections, astro travelling life, has become one of the most in demand deep house releases of 2014. a year on, they finally deliver a follow-up, this time on superconscious records. all three tracks primarily succeed due to their blend of rough analogue elements, crusty drum machine hits, tape hiss, and so on and the kind of dreamy, stargazing chords and melodies that have always been a hall mark of classic deep house. its the detroit techno influenced polyphonic spree, all cymbal-heavy shuffle, stretched-out chords and funky synthesizers - that arguably stands out, though its a tough call given the high quality threshold throughout.

powell unveils his brand new single ‘insomniac / should’ve been a drummer’.. his second release on xl recordings. following on from the acerbic ‘sylvester stallone / smut’ double a-side released earlier this year, the new single continues to blur the lines between contemporary club music, punk and forward-thinking computer acid. describing the music is a challenging prospect… but dancing to it isn’t. both as an artist in his own right and through the music released on his own label diagonal, oscar powell has established himself among this decade s most singular, exciting artists. the music is tough, but always playful.

music is love s sister label mil returns quickly returns after the dark and edgy warning ep by kastil and the tougher sound seems to have stuck around in this their 7th release. muscle house sees young irishman chris hanna step to the plate with his very own brand of tough synth driven electronic music. having just released on ejeca s own imprint this is a name you ll be hearing more of. opening the ep is drone, a rough distorted track that is narrated by the constant synth buzzing above the heavy groove laid down by hanna, peak time madness. a2. finds chris track the colonel, another furiously paced peak time track laced with a seriously evy sequenced based line straight outta detroit.

when people think of tuff gong they usually think of bob marley and rightly so, as he was nicknamed and often called tuff gong and from this his early releases which came out on the tough gong label. but tuff gong was also the name of a recording complex named after bob marley hat included a top level recording studio, pressing plant and distribution centre that would allow reggae music to carry on many years after his sad and too early demise. we focus for this release on the work carried out by the great scientist on the songs of the black solidarity label run by ossie thomas (aka joe the boss) recorded at tough gong studios. one of the foremost recording, pressing and distribution facilities on the jamaican island set up from the work of bob marley to carry forward reggae music. hope you enjoy this set.

from a basement studio in hackney, east london comes payfone s 2nd release on golf channel - quarantine b/w padre, pray for us. following on from 2014 s extremely well received paradise heater, payfone continue down a similar path for the a side quarantine. featuring once again 24 year old vocal powerhouse louis howard jones, quarantine is a semi auto biographical take on the hardships of a an underprivileged youth, set against a tough phil passera production that sounds more new york city 1984 than new port county 2004 (jones was born and raised in cardiff). cruising at 120 bpm, the dark funk guitar intro gives way to some heavy slap bass and deep synth that touches michael jackson s thriller before the direct and brutal vocals of jones hit you right between the eyes. padre, pray for us is a bizarre afro-cuban inspired homage to passera s italian father sergio ( who s telephone call can be heard on the songs intro). featuring the lethal trumpet of former cuban military private eikel venegas hernandez, this instrumental takes you to the pinata party via downtown lagos. golf channel every time !

cute heels screamed onto the scene with his debut album on dark entries. the colombian s blend of ebm and minimal synth with driving rhythms electrified interest with juan atkins describing him as -the new blood and spirit for the next step in techno music.- tough words to live up to, but this talented artist has done atkins proud with his excellent five tracker, nepotism ep. measured and thoughtful the ep is packed with eclipsed wave and bold beats. future classics shine from the drop. -nepotism structure-, with its blackened chords and stark chords, is brimming with a primal energy. -madame counsellor- ups the tempo, adding some extra squalor with wretched 303 writhe. cute heels refuses to sit in one genre, electro coming to a head in the shimmering mechanics of -cabaret literal.- -the pulse (sex drive)- closes in a seedy blur of neon lights and showing synthlines. bleak and bold brilliance from bogota.

considered french label d3 elements continues is carefully curated run with a new ep from berlin based italians, hinode. featuring four cuts of tough deep house, this sixth ep is another high grade affair that follows on from great efforts by strong souls and brian harden.

after last autumn’s ‘knowledge ep’, héctor oaks returns to key vinyl with four more solid dancefloor fillers of the kind we’re starting to expect from the berlin-based upstart. now several records deep and with his fourth berghain set firmly behind him, these days his sound is about as honed and gratifying as skills from the booth. and ‘kepler 186f’ is the proof.

mak & pasteman are pleased to announce a pair of new artists into the materials fold, woz & troy gunner aka wxt. with success across the board in their own right on black butter & mindset the pair join forces for their first joint venture on the materials imprint. convo is a big room arpeggiated techno heater, pairing emotive vocals with an air of darkness that fits perfectly with the materials aesthetic. hudson moore uses clanging metallic percussion and rattling sub notes to meld grime influences and techno mentality into a tough roller that was built for the club.

the mysterious talent antenna shows his tough, high impact house sound for his second release on the dutch pinkman label. first up, ‘childhood’ is a mid tempo bit of elastic, groove driven house with whirring machines, raw synth patterns and filtered, muffled vocals. hi hats add an incendiary element of pressure but really this one is all about the pinging, rubbery drums that flail like drunken limbs. ‘when i read my book’ is another purposeful offering riddled with melody and deep drums, slapping claps and lots of jittery cow bells, impish synth sounds and bass kills that brings a real sense of energy to proceedings. lastly, ‘in august’ is a tripped out cut with skipping kick drums, celestial and heavenly, glassy melodies and skittish percussion that all glide along in alluring and off kilter fashion. this is house music, but not as you know it!

clio has joined truesoul with some superb electronic tracks that are techy and filled with funk.
each track has its own personality, using catchy vocal hooks, synth lines that engrain into your brain and tough chunky drums that keep the rhythm flowing. this ep is one that will take any dance floor to the next level.

white asega co-­owner jack dixon wrote new curtains after a friend who was coming wildly off the rails told him he was a good producer but his tunes were boring. the original version was really sparse and about 300bpm. when jack moved to new york the parts got lost, so he remade the track a dozen times. this was the version we all liked best, although jack never wants to hear it again in his life. it sounds tough and tropical. our friend troy gunner remixed it, and turned it into something so loud and slamming it will knock your teeth out. after telling jack to stop making boring music, mark kodiak spent two horrendous years working with jamie kodiak on a song they ve called taargus. it nearly destroyed their friendship forever but we think it was worth it. it has brutal weapon sounds, nasty snares and an incessant “yo” that has been described as “annoying and unnecessary”. the artist tom pounder has created a blinding video for it that contains brand new colours. french born bass genius bambounou stepped up to remix the track, taming the wild stems into a hypnotic early­morning house stepper. it took us approximately 2000 exhausting facebook group chats, four cross­atlantic flights and one divorce to get to this point. we hope you will enjoy this record for the rest of your lives. rip ken tulley.

hailing from toulouse, french trio signs have already carved themselves out an interesting niche within the nu-skool neuro scene, stamping their unique output into the publics consciousness with big releases on red light records, bad taste recordings and c4c recordings. their beats are sparse and militant with each drum hit afforded the space to dominate the audio spectrum, with pauses and moments of silence, delicately programmed into the dna of the drum tracks, playing big part in the groove s forward momentum, propelling the riddims forward and creating a dynamically powerful and compelling backbone for the rugged, tough basslines to shine.

a fifth edition of the mosaic split series arrives, pairing up productions from anne errez and clandestine, the production duo consisting of uk house/techno mainstays, neville watson and justin peace division drake. errez, of course, featured on the previous edition of this series and it s clear the leeds-based artist has made an impression on steve o sullivan with her tough stabs and dub flecked groove of * discovery inn* a perfect fit for mosaic. complementing this, the clandestine project looks to be a most promising endeavour for watson and drake on the basis of their two searing contributions with the urgent machine funk flex of * slave to the system* a proper highlight.

the head of grounded theory berlin returns to sonic groove with his strongest outing on the label to date. henning baer brings forth a rough and tough diverse four cut ep of chunky rhythmatic techno. recording the songs during live jams and using a previously decided pool of hardware this ep has a nice old school vibe. the sound production however is very much in the modern day with its well crafted mix downs. this release has strong mass appeal for the purist techno connoisseur.

for the a-side, fuse london resident antony difrancesco joins forces with dutch born ferro and opens up with the aggressive and hypnotic -des-, with its tough drums and mesmerising pads. next up is tini and the gang- regular, crocodile soup, who brings his deeper side into action on these shoes are made for walking , a track that is elastic and seductive and expertly arranged. david gtronic s signature drums and trippy pads then mark a stunning opening to the b-side on down the burrow and last but not least, he did closes the vinyl with -algunas palabras , a track with a mixture of minimalistic and natural sounds that make for compelling listening and perfectly showcase the he did sound. this is a classy ep from a label that the world needs to get behind as they continue to grow.

now living in warsaw, donnell knox was well known, along with black nation s jay denham for forging a tough, distinct kalamazoo techno sound in the 90s. his label, sonic mind, put out some very coveted, underground wax that still sounds unique, extra rugged, and fresh. well d-knox is now on a bit of a comeback mission it seems, with some really inspiring new material, and “africa calling”. the first version, created to donnell’s much loved “spirit man” alias, is a soulful trek through layers of pads and emotive synth work. the simple, but uplifting, vocal snippet really gives it an organic and spiritual feel, the tempo is driving and quick, but the overall vibe is laid back and deep. remixes come from the likes of brooklyn based titonton duvante, who maximizes a synth pattern to a form a beautiful, reaching, version, while canada’a rennie foster channels his futago traxx style to present a full on tribal, drum based mix with added vocal pieces. also, detroit transplant, now living in canada as well, j garrett goes in with a very emotional, warm, string laden take. the ep is capped off with another version from donnell that could stand as it’s own track really, a totally different, but equally as strong, version featuring a driving baseline and detroit style string vamps. a really nice release, worthy of your support, from a well loved veteran of the techno underground.
